Police in Slovakia and the UK have broken up a criminal network involved in trafficking Slovak victims to Scotland for the purposes of sexual exploitation and sham marriages. Supported by Europol and Eurojust, law enforcement officers last week arrested five suspects in Glasgow as part of an operation that has identified 16 women as victims of human trafficking. A consortium of global law enforcement agencies including Europol and the FBI has taken down one of the largest botnets in the world. The Avalanche network was dismantled after a four-year investigation that involved investigators from over 30 countries. The web of hijacked computers was used to target online banking customers with phishing emails, and is suspected of netting the cyber criminals behind it hundreds of millions of euros. Law enforcement agencies across Europe and the US have arrested nearly 200 people in a crackdown on money laundering. In a week of action coordinated by Eurojust, police identified 580 money mules and interviewed 380 suspects in relation to losses amounting to €23 million. The operation involved police forces from countries including Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom and Ukraine. Police in Romania have broken up a major fraud, forgery and money laundering gang thought to have conned hundreds of people out of millions of euros. In cooperation with Europol and judicial cooperation agency Eurojust, officers from the Romanian Territorial Office Valcea of the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) raided 64 properties as part of the operation, which resulted in the arrest of 12 people. Thirteen additional countries have joined a European initiative designed to help private sector firms protect themselves from damaging ransomware attacks. Launched just three months ago by Europol, Kaspersky Lab and Intel Security, the No More Ransom initiative seeks to create new partnerships between private sector companies and law enforcement agencies, encouraging them to work together to take on the hackers behind this growing form of cybercrime.
