A global cybercrime network that sold hacking tools that allowed users to take over other people’s devices has been shut down in a major operation spanning several countries, Europol said in a statement on Friday. As part of an international crackdown led by Australia's Federal Police service, the EU’s police coordination agency said it had dismantled a cybercrime network called IM-RAT (Imminent Monitor Remote Access Trojan). Spanish National Police have broken up an illegal prostitution network that trafficked Romanian women for the purposes of sexual exploitation in Spain and Germany. Sixteen people, mostly Romanian, were arrested in the towns of Alzira, near Valencia in Spain, and Saarbrucken in south west Germany. Seventeen women were identified as victims of the trafficking network. Police in Spain seized some 8,000 euros in cash, jewellery worth 10,000 euros and three high-end vehicles during searches on properties linked to the gang. Fifteen people have been arrested in Lithuania and Spain in an operation against a human trafficking organisation, according to Europol, which coordinated the international operation. Two leaders of the criminal network were arrested in Spain, while the remaining 13 members were arrested in Lithuania. All 15 detainees are Lithuanians, ranging in age from 21 to 46 years. The suspects have been charged with trafficking in human beings, looting in an organised group, disorderly conduct, possession of weapons and drugs, and various other criminal acts. Italian police have made 16 arrests in an operation targeting a gang smuggling drugs to Europe through Africa. Raids, which were carried out in several cities includind Parma, Florence, Rome and Naples, resulted in the detention of Nigerian, Ghanaian and Italian citizens, accused of criminal association and the importation and distribution of drugs. In addition, the leaders of the criminal group were identified: two with residence in the municipalities of Castel Volturno and Villa Literno and one in Rwanda. Nine people have been arrested in France, Germany and Austria for the sale of stolen gold worth around 1 million euros a year, according to Europol. French gendarmes in coordination with German and Austrian police and Europol carried out a large-scale operation targeting organised robbery, concealment and money laundering, resulting in the arrest of nine people since last week. Five people have been arrested in an operation targeting a Slovakian organised crime group suspected of human trafficking and large scale money laundering, according to Eurojust, the EU’s Judicial Cooperation Unit. Several properties belonging to the criminals were searched during raids carried out in Slovakia, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The crimes of the gang were committed between 2008 and 2017 in the Slovakian regions of Prešov and Košice and on UK territory, Eurojust said. A multinational illegal prostitution network has been broken up investigators in 15 countries in an operation coordinated by Eurojust and Europol, the European police agency announced on Monday. Six people were detained on charges related to trafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation mostly in Finland but also in Sweden. Three of the arrests have been made in the Spanish cities of Torrevieja and Marbella, while the gang’s 60-year-old Romanian leader was arrested in Finland. A contract killer wanted for carrying out assassinations in three European countries has been extradited from the Czech Republic to Hungary to face charges. Czech Justice Minister, Marie Benesova, decided to extradite Csaba Dér to Budapest over Belgrade, where he is also wanted, because of the seriousness of the charges he faces in the Hungarian capital. Csaba Dér, who has Hungaraian and Serbian citizenship, was arrested by Czech police on March 1 at Amadeus Hotel in Prague. More than two million euros worth of books have been seized and 15 suspects arrested by Romanian, British and Italian authorities as part of an investigation into the theft of 260 antiquarian books, including original editions by Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton. All 15 of the suspects arrested were of Romanian origin.
