The Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic denied that the signing of a gas deal with Moscow on the weekend was connected to the country’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia. “There is no sign of equality” between the low gas prices Serbia agreed to with Russia, and the fact that Serbia has not placed sanctions on Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, Brnabic said. “Everyone who accuses us of not imposing sanctions on Russia because of the gas arrangement should be ashamed of themselves. We are not imposing sanctions on Russia out of principle,” she asserted “Sanctions do not contribute...

As early March, Air Serbia was offering 15 direct flights to Russia, up from...

Facing an election next month, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic now finds himself balancing the need to retain the support of Russian-leaning citizens, while also upholding Serbia’s aspirations regarding both the EU and NATO. In fact, Vucic has been walking this balancing act for years. Serbia’s religious, ethnic and political ties with Russia stretch back centuries and, for many Serbs, the memory of NATO’s...

New data obtained by a network of non-government organisations has revealed that more than 10,000 death certificates citing COVID-19 as the cause of death were issued in Serbia in 2020. Border tensions along the disputed Kosovo-Serbia boundary escalated over the weekend after ethnic Serbs set fire to a government office and threw hand grenades at another government building. The populist Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic described the decision by Kosovo to bar Serbian car license plates as a “criminal action,” and demanded that special police from Kosovo withdraw from the Serb-dominated north. While...
